Gunilla has always been a keen cyclist but only got into bike touring in her 40s. Her first major solo trip was around New Zealand’s South Island in 2021. It was during that journey that the idea was born to bike most of the way from New Zealand to Denmark to visit her family. Originally from Denmark, Gunilla moved to New Zealand 20 years ago and calls it home.

In preparation, Gunilla came to Bicycle Junction last year to buy a new touring bike to take on this incredible adventure. Starting in June 2023, she flew from Wellington to Brisbane to begin her journey, cycling from Brisbane up to Cairns and then through Bali, Java, and Sumatra in Indonesia, continuing on through Southeast Asia to China. Limited by her visa in China, she flew from Hong Kong to Dubai, where her brother joined her for the next part of the journey, driving through Saudi Arabia and into Jordan. From there, she flew to Turkey to avoid cycling through Israel and Syria in February 2024. A childhood friend joined her in Athens for the final leg, and together they cycled through Europe to Denmark, completing the journey in May.

Most of Gunilla's epic journey was done solo, and there are only a few women who take on such ambitious, solo cycling trips. Women face unique physical and mental challenges on journeys like these, and Gunilla’s story highlights both those struggles and her resilience. Join us to hear Gunilla share her experiences, the challenges she faced, and the insights she gained along the way.
