The Need for Tweed Ride

Bicycle Junction cordially invites you to join us on 7 November 2015 to celebrate the history of the bicycle and a bygone era when lady and gentlemen riders ruled the road.

In these modern times, the car is still king. Slowly the tide is turning, but at present the bicycle has been relegated to a utilitarian tool of transport, or a recreational machine.

The Need for Tweed ride is a chance for Wellington riders to break the mould. The ride concept will be flipped on its head, and we will instead celebrate the inherent style and grace of one of the most enduring of humankind’s inventions.

The destinations wouldn’t even matter, except that we’ve tried to make those special too.

To achieve this, we take a step back in time to the 19th and early 20th Century, when tweed suits and leather brogues were high leisurely fashion. Tweed is a sartorial icon, and nothing sets the scene for gentlemanly and lady-like fun quite like clothing befitting a relaxed and stylish ride.

The goal is to celebrate a simpler time, when simply getting out on your bike was a social pursuit enjoyed by the many.

Since the inception of the Tweed Run in London, similar movements have taken hold in metropolitan centres worldwide.

The ride will depart from Shelly Bayat 2 pm, heading south. We will stop 5 km around the bay at Cog Park for tea, sandwiches and entertainment.

The ride then continues north for about 3km via the beautiful Wellington bays to Oriental Bay before finishing at the Rogue and Vagabond lawn in town on Garrett Street.

Join us on November 7th.Don your best earthen coloured vintage fabrics and partake in a bit of light-hearted fun. While we readily admit to a vintage bias, we accept all-comers. The right attitude is the only prerequisite. It promises to be loads of fun.

While all are welcome, registration is required for catering purposes. Please email tweed@bicyclejunction.co.nz and include the following details:

  • Names of those in your group
  • Your contact phone number

Registration is $10 per person, which includes afternoon tea.

We look forward to seeing you out there.
